Artistic Massacre in Afghanistan

Apart from other human outrages that occur in Afghanistan we now helplessly witness  the announcement of the systematic destruction of all the pre-Islamic heritage in Afghanistan.Many works of art have  disappeared for ever from the museums in Kabul.

The latest massacre to be notified is that of the gathering of mortars and dynamite in order to totally destroy the

giant Buddhas,sculptured 2000 years ago in the cliffs of Bamiyan,one of which is 53 metres high (like a 17 floor block of flats).The colossal statues have already been mutilated by the military

 

The two images of the Bamiyan Buddahs, situated in Hazarajat,the heart of the country ,are(right) 53 metres  and (left) 33 metres tall.The silk route crossed this place between the third and fourth century AD and they are owed to  the sculptural skill of the kushan nomadic tribe from central Asia,with the clear influence of Greeks and Persians( as the features are classical Buddhist but the outfit is typically Greek)The faces had been mutilated at an earlier date by iconoclastic fanatics.

            

           

   



Mulah Oman,leader of the Talibans ordered the destruction of all statues in Afghanistan that were "anti-islamic".The Minister of Culture,Quudratulá Jamal ,is keeping us informed of how his country is losing its cultural treasures.

 


Apart."I am not able, nor do I want to believe that our mobilization

will not be capable of putting an end to this cultural catastrophe, shortly"
