International hall of contemporary printing and Art editions
ESTAMPA 2001
Madrid, from 7th to 11th November, 2001
Text and photos by Pablo Mañé, exclusively for Stylusart..
The week before the beginning of the show we had the opportunity to
interview Victor del Campo exclusively.Subsequently ,we have attended
Estampa 2001.In the first place we wish to thank the organization for
their deference.
Stylusart has always supported the original graphic work, which we think of as a way to pull closer works , which in many cases are quality
ones produced by established artists, at attractive prices.Probably the
vast ignorance of the techniques has limited the appraisal of the grand
public towards that form of artistic expression. It is an inconvenience
that seems to be mitigated in Madrid, a city where not only is Arco
organized , but also where a show like Estampa is held.
Art needs a
market in order to develop, and along the corridors the sap flowed in
the form of 75.000 visitors and buyers who, in about 12.000m2 , fed and
encouraged the artists' work.
It is true that some things could be found which could be considered
more as mere handcraft work or (to quote a friend of
ours),even display ones, but many things were specially
interesting.
We very much liked
Rafael Canogar's work, which was awarded the prize "to the best work or
set of work presented by a live Spanish artist", by the Asociación
Madrileña de Críticos de Arte" -AMCA-(: Madrid Association of Art
Critics). |

The "Gran premio al conjunto de la obra"( "Great prize to the whole
work" ) was awarded to Antoni Clavé.
AMCA also awarded Galería Brita Prinz the prize to the best art
gallery.Other prizes were awarded to Nuria Vidal, Pablo Alvarez de
Tolero, María Jesús Gómez and a Honorable Mention to Nuria
Solsona, by The Instituto de Bellas Artes de Tetuán . Another prize was awarded to
Raúl Real by Casa de Velázquez.
We could also see prints by artists like Picasso,
Chillida, Manolo
Valdés, Lucio Muñoz and even a piece of work by Henri
Matisse. The most
colourful was in the section called
"Tentaciones"-"Temptations"-
where work that attempts to break the mould , which in many occasions has
already been broken, is presented.
But we were interested in Pepe
Butrago's work, based on holograph, Gelda Leopold's
,with delicate work
consisting of clippings, and specially the big pillows by Ricardo
Migliorisi. |
We liked the standard at "Auriga Edicions-Art of this
century" stand, which featured work by Valdés, Chillida, Koons, Miró, Pere Jaume y Riera
i Aragó (whose exclusive interview you will be able to read in a few
weeks)..among others.
In "Nela Alberca"we could see a couple of notable
pieces of work by Lucio Muñoz.The "Raiña Lupa" gallery, directed by
Rocío Santa Cruz, presented the book "Bruja" with texts by Julio
Cortázar, with 10 etchings by Javier Pagola."Carmen de la Guerra", also
in a bold line, presented work by Ana de Alvear, Pepe Domínguez or Elena
Jiménez, among others."Hoy en el arte", directed by Teresa Nachman,
presented a collection of work by important Argentinian artists. They
were also conmemorating the 20th anniversary of Antonio Berni's
death. ("Bienal de Venecia Prize in 1962).
For the public it is one of the attractions of the show to be able to
speak directly to the creators. It is a great satisfaction to us too.We
were with Pavel Albert, who has a technical work and human category that
transcends his work. We also spoke with María del Castillo whom we will
interview in Granada, exclusively for our magazine.

You will also be able
to read in "El Estudio", my interview to Elena Laura in which she
renders an approach to her way of working. We greeted Esperanza Romero,
whose interview at Barcelona you can read .We chatted to so many other
friends that it would be impossible to mention them all
here.
In order to find a "flaw" to the show we think the catalogue
(winner of the Estampa 2001 prize to the graphic idea, by the Instituto Europeo di
Design) is the worst of all. The design is confusing, the typography
makes reading difficult and lessens the protagonism of the works of art.
However, we congratulate the team and we are looking forward to
attending Estampa 2002.
